A middle-aged widow takes a position as a maid at a well-respected, but struggling, geisha house, bearing witness to the ups and downs of its disparate residents as their financial worries begin take their toll, in Naruse’s gently affecting but decidedly downbeat drama. The Japanese auteur’s low-key approach, perfectly matching the material’s tone, is well complimented by a raft of expert performances from the finely assembled cast.
