When their neighbour’s wife drops dead unexpectedly of a heart attack, an excitement-starved middle-aged woman comes to suspect foul play. However, her husband, a neurotic literary editor, not only does not share her suspicions but actually thinks that she’s acting kind-o’nuts. Even so, encouraged by their easy-going playwright friend, she begins to indulge in a spot of amateur sleuthing. Before long, though, as the evidence begins to mount up, she manages to convince her husband (as well as more of their friends) to join forces with her in an attempt to bring their neighbour to justice, in this quietly intelligent, oft hilarious comic murder-mystery. Intricate plotting, deft characterisation, and a number of winning, charismatic performances combine to thoroughly entertaining effect.
