Bored with his blandly comfortable bourgeois existence, Ferdinand leaves his wife and kids and goes on the run with their new babysitter, a former lover of his named Marianne, who insists upon calling him Pierrot. Murder, mayhem, and hijinks follow, in this thoroughly entertaining existential romp of a road movie. Belmondo is as effortlessly wonderful as ever and Karina as delightful, with Godard’s formal playfulness complimenting rather than obscuring the action. Coutard’s bright photography also pleases, as does Duhamel’s unusual cut’n’paste score.
