In this flashy but gripping thriller, a combination of incompetence, negligence, and bad luck lead to a large freight train carrying highly flammable, toxic cargo escaping unmanned on to a mainline. With several attempts to stop it proving futile, a 28-year veteran and a first-day rookie improbably take chase in their own engine, in the hopes of catching it before it reaches a nearby city and causes untold disaster. Though Scott’s directorial flourishes – all whip pans, crash zooms, and helicopter shots – sometimes irritate, the film’s unrelenting pacing and well-developed blue collar heroes carry the viewer through to its decidedly satisfying conclusion.
