Centring on a rally organised in order to lobby for the release of the organisation’s co-founder, Huey P. Newton (imprisoned accused of murdering a police officer), Varda’s polemical short doc lovingly paints portrait of The Black Panther Party. All guns, girls, pigs, and afros, the film proves a vivid portrait of a certain time and place, providing an important, if hardly impartial, historical document.
