A Child Is Waiting

John Cassavetes | 1963 | ★★★★
A thirty-something failed concert pianist, still trying to find her place in the world, takes a job as a music teacher at a special school, but finds that her unfettered brand of compassion clashes somewhat with the more restrained variety of the school’s head teacher – a clash that comes to a head over the care of one particular boy, with whom she forms a particularly strong bond. Outstanding performances and imaginative direction combine to oft devastating effect. However, the odd didactic moment here and there takes the shine off somewhat.
