An American Werewolf in London

John Landis | 1981 | ★★★★½
In Landis’s hugely entertaining horror-comedy, an American tourist (David Naughton) manages to survive a werewolf attack in the Yorkshire Moors, an attack that killed his best friend (Griffin Dunne), but soon finds his life beset with terrifyingly violent nightmares and ghoulish visions. However, none of which gets in the way of him sparking up a steamy relationship with his comely young nurse (Jenny Agutter). The next full moon, on the other hand… With winning performances, excellent effects and make-up work, delightful use of moonful music, and one of the best endings that you’re ever likely to see, An American Werewolf in London manages to find just the right balance between horror, comedy, and romance.
