When the police’s search for a serial child killer begins to interfere with their own illicit activities, the city’s criminal fraternity bands together to track him down, employing the invisible talents of the beggars’ union in order to do so, in Lang’s extraordinary police procedural-cum-thriller-cum-courtroom drama. A remarkable performance from Lorre, a unique screenplay, Wagner’s stunning photography, and an innovative use of sound (and silence) combine to quite astonishing effect.
