A middle-aged man grows ever closer to his mistreated daughter-in-law, as his uncaring son’s philandering ways become ever more apparent, but his own daughter, who is also experiencing marital difficulties, comes to resent their relationship, in Naruse’s terribly affecting family drama. The Japanese auteur’s gentle direction, Mizuki’s subtle adaptation, Saitō’s bold yet unobtrusive score, and the outstanding performances of Yamamura and Hara combine to decidedly beautiful effect.
