In Audiard’s sexy, slow burn thriller, an underappreciated secretary, who was once deaf but can now hear quite well with the use of hearing aids, hires as her assistant an ex-con and quickly becomes quite fond of him – so much so that she soon finds herself making use of her prodigious lip-reading skills to help him to rip off a dodgy club owner, to whom he owes a considerable sum of money. Expressive mise en scène and sound design coupled with Devos’s outstanding performance manage to give us a rare and sensuous insight into the world of the hearing-impaired.
