A venerable knight, travelling back home from the crusades with his trusty squire, challenges the angel of death to a game of chess, with the agreement being that he will be allowed to continue his journey for as long as the game endures – and so he does, across a landscape blighted by plague, picking up various waifs and strays along the way, in Bergman’s masterful fantasy-drama. Excellent performances abound, captured wonderfully by Fischer’s outstanding photography, bringing the Swedish master’s potent and dark yet surprisingly humorous screenplay to life.
