In Vorlíček’s fun fantasy film, a young witch, upset at the thought of being kept behind after school for 300 years, escapes to the human world to live a less pressurised life. However, in order to stay there permanently, she must acquire and drink some hag’s ear brew, which she soon finds herself striving to do – but her efforts, more often than not, merely result in someone or other getting turned into a rabbit. The performances are somewhat mixed, but the effects work is charming, giving appealing life to the film’s gentle fantasy and even gentler humour.
