In Carpenter’s deceptively smart yet frequently hilarious piece of comic science-fiction, the dishevelled crew of a scouting ship, traversing deep space in search of unstable planets to destroy in order to avoid any potential supernovas, finds itself in dire trouble when the actions of the ship’s mascot (an alien creature that resembles a cross between Curly Howard and a large beach ball) leads to a bomb with artificial intelligence repeatedly malfunctioning. Wonderfully naff effects, amiably meandering plotting, riotous dialogue, and winning performances combine to hugely entertaining effect.
