A shipwrecked US marine washes ashore a pacific island, and discovers that its only resident is one solitary nun. Out of necessity the two quickly bond, but thoughts of a hazardous raft journey to Fiji are soon dashed when a boatload of Japanese soldiers arrives, putting their immediate safety at risk. Still, despite the circumstances – or perhaps because of them – their relationship surprisingly threatens to develop romantically, in Huston’s entertaining Second World War drama. Kerr and in particular Mitchum in a very physical role both excel.
