A few years after her seemingly happy husband commits suicide, a young mother remarries and moves to a remote coastal village to start a new life. However, the unaccountable tragedy continues to haunt her, in Kore-eda’s masterful drama. Composed of long, static, dimly lit scenes of everyday life, the film proceeds slowly towards its decidedly affecting finale, building beautifully on its subtextful formal elegance. A masterpiece.
